Image: Sad-looking Cousin (here)
12 given words:
hung burning enter white made less
last fish flowers cloth took screen
Head hung low it was a burning question
It had as yet to enter his cluttered mind
White with rage barely moments ago
Made to look less guilty but not quite
The last he remembered was being helpless
Like fish out of water no garland of flowers
But a piece of cloth covering his head
He took exception when told his sibling
Was given preference over him
Many were screened for the position
He was sad just could not stomach it
Why they preferred a younger person?

Preference for no reason but age and appearance can be crippling. But it happens. A sad reflection on souless elements of our society.
ReplyDeleteFor the chimp my guess it was his potential fertility...no wonder he looks grumpy!
ReplyDeleteAh, sad that even among chimpanzees there is age discrimination!
ReplyDeleteIt's sad not being selected... to be left out or passed by youth. That poor chimp looks so sad.
ReplyDeleteSuch deep disappointments can render us helpless indeed!
ReplyDeleteEvery living being has its day i suppose and the younger sibling is all too ready to take their place - poor old ape
ReplyDeleteTragic to learn that even chimpanzees are victim to such discrimination. Excellent write.
ReplyDeleteLots of love,
Sanaa
You wove such a good story with the words, Hank. It is the way of the world, youth preferred over age, wisdom and experience. Sigh.
ReplyDeleteHank it is sad when one is passed by because of age. Especially when one is seeking employment. What happened to experience?
ReplyDeleteYouth has it all. Name it,
ReplyDelete'they' even think they're wise
Remember way back when,
"age comes before beauty?"
..
Nicely written, Hank. A subject the older tries to not think about.
ReplyDelete..
Age can sure play a factor in many things. He sure doesn't look happy.
ReplyDeleteOthers put us in the aging box
ReplyDeleteSorry, but I thought of something else. Yes, he may be sad, but what if his younger sibling was chosen for testing, or for some type of grueling experiment? Perhaps his age saved him from a rather nasty outcome,

Ah yes, a difficult situation. I love the picture - so illustrative of the mood you describe.
ReplyDeleteWonderful picture, I am not a monkey but I've had age related problems. Great write Hank.
ReplyDeleteYvonne.
I can relate to this as I get older and the preference for younger folks becomes clearer. This is a neat idea to take 12 words and create something from them.
ReplyDeleteYouth is often chosen first. A sad reflection on one's competence.
ReplyDeleteCongratulations on getting Alex's You Rock Award.
Other opportunities will always present themselves. One must wait to see what develops. Enjoyed your poem, Hank. Nicely done.
ReplyDeleteLove the illustration and poem together! We do lose some of our humanity in envy.
ReplyDeleteIt seems the selection was for being displayed in captivity. Perhaps he just doesn't know he's the lucky one.
ReplyDeleteThe youth and the feeling of youthless-ness?
ReplyDeleteAge discrimination is everywhere. That, and how you look. Who says life is fair?
