Ruggedly handsome
Many Hollywood actors
Fit the bill before
Do we spy them now?
There are around, a few shone
So also softies
Midnight Cowboy and
Brokeback Mountain played a hand?
The signs of the times
Manifestations
Of wide liberal thinking
For, to each his own
Interesting piece. I like the connections you made here. Pretty special for me actually. My father and I have completely different tastes in movies and I mean completely, except growing up we had a few in common, the Eastwood westerns and Dirty Harry films and the Death Wish films and anything else with Charlie Bronson in them. Had forgot all about those films until now, I think i'll have to mention them to my dad again, see if he wants to pop in a dvd. Thanks
ReplyDeleteAn interesting one, Hank. Most actors now days are very far from rugged, and I know I sound old when I say this, but I can't tell most of them apart, and the women much the same. Sean Bean is the last sort of rugged type I can think of and he's pretty old now too.
ReplyDeleteFred,
ReplyDeleteIt brought back memories, certainly. Lord of the Rings,Axiata and other sci-fi have loads of screen effects. But they are dressed in garbs that hide the ruggedness. Sort of defeat the aura of the rugged hero. Yes,DVD of the oldies, the right answer. May not be in 3D though!
Hank
Absolutely, Joy! They're not sissy but their roles and the type of stories make them look softies. And, yes, they look alike, we can't tell one from the other. Their likeness are forgotten upon leaving the show unlike that of Charles Bronson that lingers for generations.
ReplyDeleteHank
Fred and Joy,
ReplyDeleteThanks for having taken time for longer comments!
Hank
Jack Palance always got to play the bad guy just because of those looks.
ReplyDeleteYes, some memories here too :)
and rutger haeur...there is def a group of actors that is now aging that carried a very solid image of men, in their rugged best...and i agree with hedge the image has much changed these days...
ReplyDeleteYou sure do put the Haiku form to many uses. Very ingenious.
ReplyDeleteInteqresting observation; and equally interesting would be to see where the stereotypical damsel-in-distress has gone to in movies.
ReplyDeletewhen i look at my son, who's 19 now then i realize how much has changed during those last maybe 20 years...he shaves his chest hair for example..generally i would say that the image of the modern man is softer than it was...but i'm sure it will change again in a few years...just like everything
ReplyDeleteYou've sure brought back some memories here, Hank. I always loved Charles Bronson, and Jack Palance was such a convincing bad guy that I didn't like him at all. LOL
ReplyDeleteI wonder if I could convince my husband to watch some of the old movies with me.
Thanks for the memories, Hank, and Fred for the idea of the DVDs.
K
Yeah there is nothing like these guys around anymore. They are all pretty boy types that you just want to smack upside the head.
ReplyDeleteThis is one of those we have in common, the rugged past - even our life as children without the fear of leeches and mosquitos.
ReplyDeleteThat last verse packs a punch, Hank!
ReplyDeleteRugged actors nowadays are so few in between. Nowadays its more like pretty and sexy guys ~
ReplyDeleteHappy day to you Hank ~
Interesting write, Hank. Things have changed through the years and they continue to change :) who knows ...what's next :)
ReplyDeleteTwo of my faces...they sure don't make them like they used to, but there are a few modern day tough guys I still like, but the world has changed as a whole and its tougher to find a hero then it used to be. Great work.
ReplyDeleteYes--an interesting idea. I'm not sure if it's liberalism or a kind of youth worship that gives us so many baby-faces! And many definitely don't age well! k.
ReplyDeleteClint Eastwood!! He's the one rugged movie dude I like.
ReplyDeleteAnd I like Hank too -- rugged in the garden, and a wonderful poet and friend.
xo
definitely a lot more pretty boys these days (I blame it on the boy bands - ha ha)
ReplyDeleteYes, to each of us his own: I never did go for the hunky type of hero. I preferred them a bit softer.
