Process Note: To explain Tonto's head-dress:
Johnny Depp looks unrecognizable. He was actually inspired to update Tonto's look after seeing a painting by artist Kirby Sattler. "I looked at the face of this warrior and thought: That's it," Depp recalls. "The stripes down the face and across the eyes . . . it seemed to me like you could almost see the separate sections of an individual, if you know what I mean."Depp says the lines of paint on the face represent the cross-section of a man's emotional life.
"There's this very wise quarter, a very tortured and hurt section, an angry and rageful section, and a very understanding and unique side. That makeup inspired me."
Sattler's painting also inspired Tonto's headdress. "It just so happened Sattler had painted a bird flying directly behind the warrior's head. It looked to me like it was sitting on top, "I thought: Tonto's got a bird on his head. It's his spirit guide in a way. It's dead to others, but it's not dead to him. It's very much alive." how cool...i did not know there was one in the works...i used to watch the Lone Ranger at my grammas house...
ReplyDeleteI loved watching the Lone Ranger when I was young ... how fun!! Johnny Depp certainly picks his roles -- wearing all the masks well!! :)
ReplyDeletePink Sandpaper
Should be a good one I hope. But with that dead bird on his head I still say Depp looks like a dope.
ReplyDeleteI had no idea they were doing a remake on Tonto. I love Johnny Depp. Looks like it will be good. Thanks for sharing!
ReplyDeleteThat should be a great movie. I look forward to. Loved Lone Ranger and Tonto! Hi-ho Silver!!!! Nice write, Hank.
ReplyDeleteA unique take on the prompt to be sure, but a fun one! Looking forward to the movie, I'm interested to see what a modern take on such an iconic duo will look like in the end.

ReplyDeleteA Depp version will be a hoot!
ReplyDeleteI didn't know there is a remake....it should be interesting where Johnny Depp takes this ~ Nice one Hank ~
ReplyDeleteSounds great, thanks. k.
ReplyDeletei just hope they dont butcher it really...they have done that with so many of the tv shows from when i was a kid you know....i dont want to see another piece of my childhood destroyed...smiles.
ReplyDeletenice...and there can't go much wrong when Johnny Depp is involved..just saying...smiles
ReplyDeletegreat way to combine two prompts
ReplyDeletewhen do we stop being a child
I remember the old series. It was good. Excellent celebration in words.
ReplyDeleteLovely way to celebrate the upcoming - and much anticipated - release.
ReplyDeleteI did not know this! Thank you for the update. I look forward to it as well, since the TV show was one of my favorites as a child. Always looking out to help others was the mainstay in these shows, and I think it rubbed off somewhat in my life. I also like the quotes you pick out from Depp. That's a very keen description he gives of the make-up.
ReplyDeleteWow! Love the new image of the Lone Ranger and Tonto ~ fun haiku on 'mask' ~ great post ~ thanks, naamste, ^_^
ReplyDeleteHere's the essence of what we're addressing any way and you've captured well these memories!
ReplyDeleteLone ranger - how fun your haiku are
ReplyDeleteJohnny Depp is such a character. I think it's a wonderful interpretation of Tonto. Gosh, I never missed an episode of The Lone Ranger as a kid...LOL Took me back a few years here Hank.
ReplyDeleteLone Ranger? This certainly sopunds very familiar, a favourite.
ReplyDeleteCowboys and Indians - we used to play that riding our horses as kids. Can't wait to see the new remake. Thanks for the share and the write.
ReplyDeleteDear All,
ReplyDeleteThe general opinion seems to be a grand welcome is awaited for. We've had Clint Eastwoods and Franco Nero westerns before which apparently are now sorely missed. Instead, the proliferation of sci-fi epics we have had in recent years dulled our imaginations. Cowboy and Indians ought to whet the appetite of those who still hold the memories. I loved the "Lone Ranger", nice write, Hank.

Oh, definitely something I'll go and see, although I pretty much see everything anyway, but Johnny Depp, in my opinion, is the best actor working, and that's by a mile, always nails his roles. And interesting note about him as well, is that I heard he refuses the finished product of any of his films, can't remember the reason why though. Very neat verse to accompany this movie news. Thanks
ReplyDeleteWow. I remember these two from black and white telly !
ReplyDeleteThe new Tonto looks a tad scarey :)
Oh, fun! I second Brian's hope that they don't spoil the memory of childhood Saturdays. But no matter, what, I'd see it just for Johnny Depp.
ReplyDeleteAs a kid, I loved the masked man!
ReplyDeleteMask to Hide Your Fear
Nicely done on Mask. Kaykuala your haiku are so different. Loved reading them.
