the two Queens menacingly facing up
the timer keeps ticking
a critical moment thinking hard
your move!
such is the beauty of the game
strategy, planning, moves
all in the head within split seconds
with two Generals trying to outwit
in battle in the most
sterile moment in time
brought to its highest level
during the Fischer and Spassky era
which captured the attention
of the enthusiasts and players
Grandmasters' openings
on everyone's lips
in the meantime having to tolerate
Fischer's strategic antics
the ever-patient Spassky
tested and provoked to the fullest
there are players now, yet
but there are more gamers
with sophisticated devices
gone are the days
that used to get every enthusiast
transfixed and hypnotized

Very true Hank and wonderfully spoken. There is so much more technology these days for sure. Glad as always to see you at the Muse!
ReplyDeleteIt is a game for the ages Hank because it is a game of seige.
ReplyDeleteIBM may be able to beat chess masters; but are they able to simulate the adrenalin, the sweat, the love of the game? Nicely written!
ReplyDeleteCome play chess with me Hank!
ReplyDeleteHopefully the game of kings will prevail. Well observed. Love this line: 'in the most

Well done, Hank. You know your chess!!
ReplyDeleteInteresting contrast between players and gamers--is it only the devices that make the difference? Is it the idea of exploits to an endless victory?

I completely agree. I love the Bobby Fischer movie. It keeps me the edge of my seat the whole time I’m watching. I can’t imagine seeing such games played out in real life! It must have been breathtaking and heartstopping to watch.
I still think games between humans are more satisfying than those played on devices. Well said, Hank.
ReplyDeleteI forget whether it's right brain dominants or left brain dominants who excel at chess, but I DO remember I'm wrong brain dominant!!
ReplyDeleteIn our house, physical games are not dead!
ReplyDeleteI would rather play a board game it's more engaging and personal. I was never very good at chess but, checkers is another game. haha
ReplyDeleteI remember Fischer/Spassky. The whole world was transfixed, every move. I miss that all so much.
