Image: It's a Goal! (here)
On a momentous night
With everything still at stake
They deserved it but it came
after an early setback
"We are very proud
We have received a great gift
We were rarely threatened"
Gesticulating furiously
Resisting the pressure
They made just one change
four years ago
A foreign coach
They were happy with the efforts!

ha. cool. watched us go down to germany yesterday but we still get to advance...got belgium next, so we shall see....
ReplyDeleteNo disrespect to the US, but who'd have thought the US goes through while Spain, Portugal and England go home? I've seen many disheartened faces over here... Nicely topical.
ReplyDeleteEnjoyed that you chose such a timely subject and did the newspaper thing, Hank. And, Marina, you're right. No one over here expected us to go through this far. It brings home the fact that soccer is finally catching on for us. This is the first year I've even been aware of it!
ReplyDeleteI guess have to expect the unexpected indeed
ReplyDeleteWonderfully creative poem derived from an event and newspaper report ~ well penned ~ thanks, ~ ^_^

I assume it was not the game that bit the most :-)
ReplyDeleteI like the dadaist take on the World Cup. "They made just one / change four years ago" - ha ha what coach would do that? Your poem mad eme smile, Hank.
ReplyDeletenice... i'm watching the games as well... so far there has been quite some interesting und unexpected developments...i like
ReplyDeleteYou have conveyed the excitement of the World Cup, Hank!
ReplyDeleteThere it is - as dada as anything you can imagine - men playing ball without their hands - right out of Monty Python!!
ReplyDeleteGesticulating furiously - dada soccer - ha, why not?
ReplyDeleteThe world cup fever is everywhere ~ You caught the excitement Hank ~
ReplyDeleteEven DaDA cannot resist this Game!

ReplyDeletebeautifully captured.
I am really getting into the World Cup this year, mainly because my fiancee is German and she's crazy about soccer lol

ReplyDeleteA great Dadaism ode to the cup Hank :-)
ReplyDeleteSalam hormat dan salam Ramadhan Hank. I understand US will meet Germany at 1 am tonight!
ReplyDeleteReading Brian I guess I was late in news :(
DeleteIt's Brazil vs Chile! I just saw Brazil's first goal through David Luiz a few minutes ago!
DeleteHank
An equalizer by Alexis Sanchez a few seconds ago. Woweee! The stadium erupted big time!
DeleteHank
It appears to be an own goal after viewing the replay. David Luiz was not the scorer. But still it stays 1 - 1 at half time!
DeleteHank
The game ended after extra time still tied at 1 - 1 We are now waiting for the penalty shoot-out. Chile nearly made it in the dying seconds of the game when Pinilla smashed it against the cross-bar but it was hard luck!
DeleteHank
Brazil apparently had not lost since 1975 on home soil
Delete1. David Luis scored 1. Pinilla 0
2. William 0 2. Sanchez 0
3. Macello scored 3 missed name scored
4 Hulk 0 4 Diaz scored
We are now square 2 apiece
5 Neymar scored 5 Jara missed! (Chile goes home!)
( Brazil has the advantage again!)
Hank
The above is right to the minute drama and Brazil goes to the quarter final. Neymar was the hero again!
DeleteHank
This was fun! The players are super stars, but your poem shows how the coach can make all the difference.
