What I want are memories of old
None annoying even remotely interfering
Not segregated or isolated but bold
Unlike a jury sequestered before reaching
a verdict who are strictly seen as free
from influence and interference
That is how a poppy is deemed to be
But not what it is at the moment
Poppy Day memories with a proud disposition
Where replica red flowers were pinned
at the breast pocket in remembrance
of fallen heroes who had left us since
Instead poppies are now tolerated with dread
Associated with drug lords of vicious atrocities
Living it up with a price on their heads
While in its wake the helpless junkies
Strewn in a 'drunken' stupor in back alleys
Condemned as living skeletons for all to see
MLMM's Tale Weaver #136 - what I want
Sumana's at PU's Midweek Motif - memories
Seems even something like a poppy can be turned on its head and made dreadful
ReplyDeleteI like the thoughts you express here Hank. Yes the meaning behind things we once held as significant have been eroded in modern times. Thanks for sharing with the tale weaver.
ReplyDeleteHow far we have fallen....well expressed, Hank.
ReplyDeleteYes, Yes, Yes! Well said. Thank you.
ReplyDeleteIt's bad enough,we give up freedoms heroes died for. But look how we treat them
All the associations with this flower are heartbreaking. Well put Hank.
ReplyDeleteInteresting write. I do remember those poppies on poppy day? Do they still do it.
ReplyDeleteMy goodness this is poignant!
ReplyDeleteHow sad! Affecting write, Hank.

ReplyDeleteVery well expressed I love the remembrance here of ANZAC day when we all wear poppies but you showed that the image of poppies is now also a symbol of degeneration
