the 12 given words:
shelter map path sweep ground push
beach funnel power surge wake spin
a sheltered life
she needs to map a path
as all mothers do
for a sweep of the battle ground
to push from a beachhead
in a funnel formation
powered by sheer determination
to survive the winter
a surge of elements
in the wake of the impending cold
where a spin of strategies
relevant to little animals
in their hibernation prospects
are to be adopted
Beautifully worded and with a hint of nostalgia of dwindling summer days.
ReplyDeleteI can see the squirrels are so very active right now... we have hazelnuts outside our window, and sometimes they come really close.
ReplyDeleteI hope that funnel does not capture her. I love the spin of strategies.
ReplyDeleteWe had an active colony of squirrels until a barred owl took up residence in our woods, and they all sort of disappeared! I miss watching their antics. Loved your poem!
ReplyDeleteIt always amazes me how you utilise the chosen words so well and end with a fine poem.
ReplyDeleteI often wonder where squirrels go in inclement weather--what a fine poem Hank!
ReplyDeleteHave to get those digs full indeed before the crummy snow takes seed
ReplyDeleteAn ingenious write....I love:
ReplyDelete'for a sweep of the battle ground
to push from a beachhead
in a funnel formation'
You definitely have made some good points with your poem, Hank.
ReplyDeleteEverything seems to be changing its clothes and putting thing away for winter. Because... it's coming.
ReplyDeleteThat was a clever way to blend the elements.
ReplyDeleteSan Francisco squirrels are kind-a spoiled. Like the people. (does that mean anything)
ReplyDeleteAh yes, the creatures also feel the cold. Nicely written.
ReplyDeleteWonderful job on the extended 'battleground' metaphor - for cold weather is, indeed, a battleground for all living things. An awesome little piece.
ReplyDeleteA clever poem about these wonderful creatures
ReplyDeleteSuch an interesting direction to take those prompt words!
ReplyDeleteBeautifully poignant!!
ReplyDeleteI hadn't thought of the squirrel's increasing activity as a battle to be waged before. It's an apt analogy.
