Brilliance had luck to play its pittance

No spyglass held to view the distance
Life an open book set to differ
Some made a name in all innocence
Some ended the day a sad failure
Brilliance had luck to play its pittance
Most drifted along to remain poor

So success did not discriminate
Some plainly luckless not got it made

Note: Not given thoughts to the 
iambic meter. Not really sure if 
this is an acceptable ottava rima

    Since most drifted along to remain poor success did not discriminate. That makes sense. Since we all die there's no discrimination there either.

    The rhyme scheme is like ottava rima, but there are 10 lines rather than 8. It is hard to say what is acceptable as an ottava rima form since all forms are somewhat arbitrary and open for modification. As far as I'm concerned, I accept it. I'm glad you linked it, Hank!

      Frank, had it amended into 8 lines for the immediate to bring it nearer to the rules as stipulated.

    Indeed, no one can really see what the future has in store. It is quite extraordinary how some rather ordinary people when young could achieve tremendous success later in life, on the one hand, and how those expected to be a success ended up a failure somehow.
