First, Hank, it's great that you found the commonalities in the Christian and Muslim traditions. The fact that Jesus is honored as a prophet in Islam is something most Fundamentalists don't care to discuss.
ReplyDeleteMoses is Moshe
Adam is Adam, pronounced "ah-Dahm"
Noah is not really a prophet in Judaism
Abraham is Avrahan, although he began as Abram and his wife Sarah was originally Sarai; the change in name was given by God.
Isaac is Yitzchak (Yitz-hock), variable is Itzak, as in Perleman, the maestro
Joseph and Jesus are not mentioned in OT, but Jeshua is the most common translation in Hebrew.
Thanks again for reminding us all that Christians (people of The Way), Jews (people of The Book) and Muslims all worship the same God. The main difference is that Muslims don't believe God had a son, but that Jesus was a prophet; however, Mohammed (pbuh) is considered the last prophet of God.
Aren't you glad you know a pastor's wife? Ha ha. Amy
Am not a person of faith myself but thought this was a wonderful comment in so many ways.
DeleteThat's wonderful, Amy! So it goes. There are many things in other faiths to know or at least to be aware of. One is within one's own world most of the time. Yes, lots of similarities but with some little differences. You're pretty well informed. Ma'am! Thanks for sharing!

Thanks Pirate!

Despite what may be proclaimed in the media, or by fundamentalists on all sides, there is more in common between different faiths than meets the eye. I'm a believer that humankind is essentially good, that the God we worship is the same, except that the way we worship may be different, and thus we are all one family.
ReplyDeleteAs long as politics is in the pic, it'll be grim. Common beings have nothing to quarrel about. We just do our own thing none others the wiser. Rightly so Sam! Thanks for hosting at d'Verse!

through much of the first part of the list i think you would find the jewish line very similar...there are similar roots in all of these....
ReplyDeleteThat is right Brian! I just know enough to get by for my daily needs. But the big pic shows lots of common things. One can know more if one cares to study them!

Nice post Hank. To bring those faiths together is just great ... there is only one God, Allah, Buddha or what else His name is ... all Gods are one God ... if the world would accept that there was no war at all ...
ReplyDeleteMost of the great religions of the world share so much it's odd they fall out over such a little!
ReplyDeleteAn interesting little weaving of traditions here, Hank!

Christian gnosis (the way) was born out of Judaism, from those Jews who went to Egypt to study in the mystery schools of Alexandria. Sufi mysticism and the Magi of Persia had their roots in the same knowledge. Unfortunately this has been lost or driven underground because of the hierarchical religions which later grew with the aim of controlling the people (both Christian and Muslim). Thought provoking post:)
ReplyDeleteI came looking for your glosa, which seems to have gone walkabout. Did you have a glitch with the link?
ReplyDeleteYes, but I could not correct it as Mr Linky had expired. It's here below:

Great thoughts here. What are we fighting about
ReplyDeleteLet is be our hope that all believing in the same God we could put aside the differences that surely were given us to find our own paths to salvation. We just need to accept that other faiths are not wrong but traveling a parallel road.
ReplyDeletethe differing faiths do share some interesting elements....thanx for sharing your knowledge..
