Image: A Hook-nosed Dodo (here)
a) large extinct flightless bird found
on Mauritius until the end of the 17th century
b) an old-fashioned and ineffective person.
Theme: Animals - D for Dodo
dodos like the platypus forgotten
in the separation of land mass found
respectively only in Mauritius and
Australia but the dodos unlike the
latter ended as a sad consequence
of exposure to early settlers
being flightless most vulnerable easily
likened to the turkey as an attraction
that it became extinct within
a short space of 50 years
now only remembered not in a celebrated
way as a person who runs in the race but
never winning

In only fifty years? That was fast.
ReplyDeleteWe are so quick to rush things to extinction. The last 100 years have been terrible. Good one, Hank.
ReplyDeleteWe seem to be losing species every day. It's a terrible thing. And I'm losing hope that it will get any better--if people don't take responsibility and start caring (but we know how that goes these days).
ReplyDeleteP.S. Hank, I like the poem very much. Your poetry is always good at teaching us new things and pointing out current issues. However, I deleted the link. Today's prompt asks for prose: "in 313 words or fewer, write a new short story or essay (fiction or nonfiction), using magical realism as your genre."
DeleteThis happens on the 1st Sunday of every month. I hope you chose to participate with a short story or an essay. 🖤❤️
So sad for the Dodo. I've always wished I could see a real live one... Happy A to Z... Might want to check your days and calendar? Saturday was "F"...!
