The Umrah

Hank was away for 2 weeks to perform the Umrah, a pilgrimage
to the Holy Land.  It was a hectic sojourn of physical endurance.
Other major religions have their own versions of pilgrimage, to the
St Peter’s Basilica, the Ganges and Jerusalem  to name a few.
Hank had gone through a revelation of a journey fulfilled just as much.

It’s a journey of fulfillment tinged with religious rituals and
endurance that are satisfying despite age being a factor. There’re
so many episodes and observations that Hank proposes to
chronicle in a series of postings subsequent to this.

Fulfilling a call
Journey to the Holy Land
With humility

Serious abandon
Prostrating to Godliness
Supplicating self

Abundance to see
Providence’s Greatness first hand
Satisfied yearnings

    1. The Umrah is liken to a minor Haj which can be done at any time of the year. The rituals to be performed are less than the Haj.

The Haj is the real thing and is only performed once a year in the specific month of Zulhijjah (the 2nd last month on the Muslim calendar) For this year the Haj season falls between the 12 till 19th October 2013. Those who wish to perform the Haj will go either 8 days prior or 8 days after the above dates. But in most instances many arrive much earlier and stay on longer in the Holy Land which may just be a once in a lifetime journey.

    2. I had gone 3 times. My first Umrah in 1977, my Haj in 1985 and this second Umrah in 2013.

Invigorating and tiring but refreshing as you've rightly said. Do that Ma'am! I'm sure you will get to go someday,to the St Peter’s Basilica that I had heard so much about. Pray that you do!

The pilgrimage at the Ganges is spectacular, involving millions. It's sad there are casualties in the Railway Station stampede at Allahabad in recent days!

  7. So many people today do not understand why those of us who faithfully practice our religion do so. It is lovely to see that you have been able to make such a special journey.

I have been a fan of yours from Pat's page for a very long time and have been too afraid to follow you. After your absence I have decided to be brave and approach you here.

    Thank you

    1. Thanks Lisa! Been a hectic 2 week break. The last time I was in Makkah it was in 1985. This time I had to take a slow pace. Tiring but more fulfillment I would say!
