Stripes

Image:1 Peek-a-boo! fooled you!

Black stripes on white
Or white stripes on black
The perennial question
often asked. You want a
visual answer or a scientifically
proven answer was the retort!

Gathered in a group you could
not even make out. Was it the head
or the rump looking your way
It was perfect harmony, an ogre
of black and white with blinking
eyes at certain points and moving
tails swishing slowly at other points.
Those were the only tell-tale signs.

They must have laughed at us.
You stupid humans! They must have
said that many times. Must you try to
unravel the discord?

Do not scatter us or you’ll be confused
Just be happy with the crossings across
the road. Our heritage to humanity!

  1. You've overlooked pyjamas - another heritage.

  2. That is quite a picture! Indeed animals must laugh at our antics sometime. And we consider ourselves the most intelligent creatures? LOL

(I enjoyed your use of vice/versa words!)

  3. Yes the cat laughs everyday, at stupid humans who come to play. I say black stripes on white, but who knows if I'm right.

  9. I really enjoy how the same prompt results in amazingly different poems. Very clever. I often imagine what the animals must be saying about us. I liked how you used the vice/versa words.

  10. I have a feeling many different kinds of animals call us stupid. :)

    They just roll their eyes.

I've never seen a whole herd of zebra, but a few single ones here and there in Texas.

  11. So true!! We humans have a habit of trying to logically resolve everything rather than accepting something. :)

    Nice poem!

  12. Hank, first, the image was quizzical and fun. Your thoughts about the makeup of the zebra, the front and back (Pushmipullyu?), and finally, what ALL animals think of us... especially when they are behind bars or in cages... or cats, of course! Great, fun write. Thanks, Amy
