It came in spurts!

What a word!
It came in spurts
Many thought the world was round
Their meager survival was safe and sound
Many sincerely believed but found
they were wrong
A grim discovery
The rude ills of a bully

It came in a din
Not in any ordinary scene
But one of wanton destruction
Meted devoid of compassion

Change of tactics
Made them slick
It was before on the ground
But now the use of drones
Brought it to a higher level
Resulting in upheavals

Fire-power against man
Sufferings that remained
Brushed aside as collateral damage
Lame justification no less
Faulted for consorting
Or so it would seem
With enemies who were cursed
They could not escape the bursts

It came in spurts
Staccato was the word

  1. sad...drones make it one layer removed...and the killing impersonal...collateral damage...and we dont have to look at it...touch it...smell the death...from so far away...

  5. Humanity has a curious need to destroy itself (other creatures cheer!) if that is not the case we must all be mad.

  6. The dehumanization is the only thing when we can justify collateral .. and drones take that to a whole new level.... a staccato now heard in our peaceful North.. and it's all connected.

  7. I like the way you have left the word itself to the very end of the poem but provided intriguing descriptions of it in application throughout each stanza.

  8. Ouch! Each stanza shows the sound, the stabs, the unexpected continuity of Hell. Wow.

  10. As time passes, we find more efficient (less personal) ways to destroy each other in the name of preserving what some believe of value. "It came in spurs," indeed, and it feels as it will take everything away in the same way... *sigh*

  11. Of all that I have to fear, I think I fear war the most. It's a terrible thing, and the greatest irony of all, fighting for humanity, yet destroying your own at the same time.. the ultimate sacrifice. It's truly never ending. Thank you for sharing such a thought provoking piece with us, yet again!

  16. If those who made the decisions found themselves amidst the "collateral damage" of drone attacks, perhaps they would re-think. Good one, Hank.

  17. Not the kind of 'music' that is pleasing to the ear. Time passes but the horrors go on and on as if history could teach us nothing.

  18. How do we really find real peace, Hank? Too many violence surrounds us all.. how frightening..
