time stood still for one with no dreams

3WW given words:
calculating messy envious

oblivious of reckoning and faceless
surrounded by those others pitching
in a competitive world running headless
a mind numb in efforts of calculating

time stood still for one with no dreams
while others grappling with their own
life not messy for one with no means
not in the rat race with no problems

passers-by envious of his existence
no bills to pay no one else to take care
wife children pets were all bothersome
ignored by others a vagabond laid bare

meals taken from the homeless kitchens
bed of roses made out of cardboards
cash thrown into the hat in abundance
fat savings accounts not unexpected

  1. This vivid portrait of loneliness and despair, shades of the 'Good Samaritan' in this, life is often much more than the sum of all its parts.

  5. Despair is one thing I have experienced recently, but there always seems to be a positive thought somewhere in your mind, act on that thought......it works.
    Great poem Hank.

  6. blows my mind thinking that anyone would be envious of such a life...
it is not as easy as others think...especially when you have to find
food and shelter every day....and everyone looks at you with disdain...
having no dreams is so sad...

  8. 'a mind numb in efforts of calculating' ~ different kind of 'style' of life....behind homelessness there are always the reasons, and they are different for each of them....~ loved the intense words set, bringing the awareness and care of poet on the subject to the readers.

  9. I did not really get despair from this--more that despite his position seemingly at the bottom there is a freedom of sorts. I find irony in this poem. Well done.

  10. The line that most speaks to me is "time stood still for one with no dreams". Sad to live without a dream. Or a bed, for that matter.

  11. Ironic that the man with nothing has no worries.
Although if he's a professional, he probably makes a ton of money doing that.

  15. I am always sad that we don't see the "person" when we see the homeless. I'm glad you are not one of those people, as evidenced by this poem...

  19. Hank,

what a sad world with such poorly divided wealth. Dreadful to see people sleeping in the doorways of cities like London and San Francisco. Cities with great wealth, yet the homeless are fighting over a black bin liner, or a dry piece of cardboard..I witnessed that in San Francisico!

  20. Perception is such an interesting things... especially when seen through the eyes of those who haven't been there.

    Love the comparison.

  21. I think this serves as a reminder that we should never judge another until we've walked a mile in their shoes. We get so caught up in our own problems that we fail to recognize others who are in greater need than we are. There's always someone out there who's suffering more. Excellent piece!!
