Like ants around sugar grains

The given words:
circle empty fear flesh ghost granite
howl names through veins weight

Circle of friends milling around
Like ants around sugar grains
Empty of skills or motivations
Standing on precipice of rocky terrain

Fear seen through pale colored flesh
Ghost-like that softens hard granite
Howls of laughter of wild caress
Throwing names with fervor of flight

That is how to survive through veins
Of weight ganging on victims who are duds
Unfortunate to fall prey to their whims
Crooks not working hard but 'working smart'

  1. Hank,

An excellent piece of writing, which had me consider the life of gangs and those who simply 'hang around,' in expectation of causing, or finding trouble. A way of life, with sharp edges to their personas. City living in anywhere, with bystanders pale and scared to become involved...Reality..

  3. Gangs have strength in numbers as they ready to pounce. Crooks work smart and they are set, sad but true

  5. You have way with words. We could learn a lot from ants, couldn't we? :D

  9. but ants are hardworking...

the poem reminded of the latest news here in japan about a 13 yr old boy killed by a gang.. the boy was helpless like the sugar grain

  11. swear i thought i commented on this earlier hank...sorry...
there is strength in numbers...an art colony can be devastating when they work together...as can a gang of people...all in what their influence is though...to good or otherwise...

  13. That last line is the thing nightmares are made of... Unintelligent lazy beings are tiresome and can take a few resources; smart ones that care not for a day of work can destroy everything in their path. Scary.

  14. Beautiful analogy Hank.. A single ant can't do so much damage but a swarm of ants can move mountains.

  15. Makes one shiver ... having seen how ants can devastate and area working together ... this makes one wonder about the power that moves a mass of beings ... whether ants or humans.

  18. Ants! It's about that time of year again! The one thing I dislike most about the summer months. The unsightly any mounds in the yard, frequent calls to the exterminator, the losing battle we face trying to keep them at bay and out of our kitchens and doorways.. Well done Hank! Once again! Excellent use of the words given. You've woven them together very nicely!
