living is lean in the year ahead

The  10 of 12 given words:
down path trees apart naked
chased fields whisper lean silver

contending to be well at ease
down the path with trees far apart
rather naked seeking out peace
with the plea of avoiding false starts

chased in the preceding year
by the fields of confusion straying
through the new normal in a whisper
into the pandemic without warning

living is lean in the year ahead
to forget all the surprises that rocked
hoping for the normalcy of old instead
no resolutions to temper the shock

praying for a whimper of silver lining
loss of life of jobs and broken homes
but craving for answers in between
with hopes to let the imagination roam

  1. I suspect it will be next fall before anything close to normal is achieved, if ever. Covid will still be with us, but immunization will be widespread by then. Stay safe, Hank. So far, so good, among we poets. There are advantages to being reclusive, lol.

  3. Sometimes, I wonder if hoping for "the normalcy of old" doesn't make things even harder. It's very difficult, if not impossible, to move back. Maybe we can move forward somehow, and live the lean year... until we arrive at the year of plenty.

  4. A year that has given us all an opportunity to reassess our priorities...and appreciate those we hold dear. Well written!

  5. Poignant Hank, and well written. This year has left behind a bitter exclamation point, and the year ahead still a question mark. I hope this misery finally comes to an end — period.

  6. Well expressed Hank, what a year we've had not to mention bad weather here in the UK over Christmas.
I wish you well and stay safe.
    Yvonne.

  7. Felt this -- the emptiness between the trees and the leanness to come. Hoping that this upcoming year allows us to find our ways back to a more present community.

  8. The fields of confusion ... yes that is an apt description of 2020. Wishing you a good 2021, a healthy 2021. Cheers, Hank! It's great 'knowing' you.

  11. I'm afraid the great reset won't be stopped. We shouldn't hope but act.

    Hello Hank!

  12. I wonder what the new normal will look like Hank! It seems we are on quest that leads us to where?

Wishing you a safe and happy 2021.
